April 2024 is a busy month for League members. Grafton is hosting a Candidates Forum on Sunday, April 28 at 7 pm in Room A at the Grafton Municipal Center. This forum will be broadcast live and recorded by local cable television. Grafton has races for Select Board and School Committee.

March was a busy month with our Annual Potluck on March 10. After dinner we listened to a presentation by Paula Lea and David Piscia outlining the LWVUS position on Repealing the Electoral College. This position was adopted by the League in the 1970’s. The presenters explained the process, history, and shortcomings of the current system, under which the President and Vice President are not elected by the people’s majority vote but rather by a convoluted system of electors. This is problematic as a candidate can lose the popular vote but still win the presidency with the right combination of states (totaling 270 electoral votes). This situation has happened five times in our history, most recently in 2016, and again in 2000, 1888, 1876, and 1824. This reality discourages many people from voting as they feel that their vote doesn’t count. The League believes that repealing the Electoral College will give more power to voters and increase turnout.

Also in March we had a book discussion on “Democracy Awakening” by Heather Cox Richardson. Colleen Corbett led the discussion.
